I had to interject at this point because Will’s tactic was quite clear, and his mother was going for the bait. Soon after, both Ruth and Will laughed as he identified the process. Mom eventually turned to Will and said, “You are pretty good at doing that, but I’m still not getting you the game.”

In many such cases, I’ve listened as parents argue with their child over whether or not a friend really does have such a game. They’ll sometimes say something like, “I’ll look into it.” In all these cases, the parent has taken the bait and fallen into the trap—the trap of buying into the child’s irrelevant logic. This is precisely the child’s goal when employing the tool of Character Comparison.

Many parents fall prey to Character Comparison by erroneously thinking that their child is simply mistaken or lying. Others take the bait out of a need to be liked. Regardless of the reason why, entertaining this Tool of Power is a mistake because the behavior of other parents is irrelevant to the decisions you make for your child. Will’s friends may actually have this inappropriate video game, and their parents may have even purchased it for them. But that doesn’t make it right for your child to have it. You make the rules in your household.
